Ava is a small farming town in southern Illinois, about 20 miles northeast of Carbondale via State Route 3. The town sits at a crossroads where Route 3 meets Route 150, connecting the Mississippi River valley to the Shawnee National Forest. Southern Illinois Airport lies just southwest of town, bringing occasional aviation traffic through the area. The community sits where three geological regions meet: river floodplain, Ozark foothills, and Shawnee Hills.
