Atwater is a Central Valley city along Highway 99, about 65 miles southeast of Modesto and 8 miles north of Merced. Major routes include I-580 to I-5 to SR-99 from the Bay Area, or I-5 north from Southern California. The Castle Air Museum at the former air base features over 70 military aircraft, including a walkable B-52 bomber.
