Attalla sits along Interstate 59 in northeast Alabama's foothills, about 60 miles north of Birmingham and 90 miles from Chattanooga. US Highway 11 runs through downtown while State Route 77 heads east toward Georgia. Most visitors use I-59 from Birmingham or Atlanta, with local traffic taking US 11 to nearby Gadsden. The city earned its nickname "City Between the Rivers" from its location where the Etowah and Coosa rivers converge.
