Atkinson is a small farming town in north-central Nebraska's Sandhills, about three hours northwest of Omaha via Highway 275 and Highway 11. The town sits along the Elkhorn River valley and serves surrounding cattle ranches. Highway 11 runs north-south through town, connecting to Highway 20 near Stuart for east-west travel to O'Neill or Valentine. The 1920s grain elevator still dominates the skyline downtown.
