Athens is a small Marathon County city of about 1,000 people in north-central Wisconsin's forested region. Highway 29 runs east-west through town, connecting to Wausau 25 miles southeast, while Highway 13 provides the north-south route to Medford and Stevens Point. The community hosts annual Beef and Dairy Days featuring traditional crosscut saw competitions from its logging heritage.
