Athens is a small central Illinois town of about 2,100 people, located 20 miles northwest of Springfield via State Route 97 and I-55. It sits in rolling prairie country along the Sangamon River valley. The town serves as a quiet agricultural community with easy access to Springfield and Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport. Athens is the birthplace of poet Edgar Lee Masters, author of "Spoon River Anthology."
