Artesian is a tiny farming town of 148 people in south-central South Dakota's Sanborn County. Take US Highway 14 from Huron (25 miles west) or connect via State Highway 37 from Mitchell (35 miles south). The town sits in rolling prairie farmland typical of the James River valley region. Artesian gets its name from the artesian wells drilled here in the early 1900s that provided reliable water for this agricultural community.
