Archer City is a small Texas town of about 1,200 people, located 25 miles southwest of Wichita Falls on US Highway 79. It's the Archer County seat, sitting on rolling prairie at about 1,000 feet elevation. Most visitors arrive via US 79 from Wichita Falls or take US 287 northwest from Dallas-Fort Worth. The town is famous as author Larry McMurtry's hometown and the inspiration for "The Last Picture Show."
