Arcata is a college town 280 miles north of San Francisco via Highway 101, home to Humboldt State University and 18,600 residents. The scenic coastal drive takes about five hours, while Highway 299 connects inland to Redding. The California Redwood Coast Airport is 15 miles north. The town square features a rare 1906 statue of President McKinley.
