Apple River is a tiny community of 290 people in northwestern Illinois farm country, about 25 miles from Dubuque and 70 miles from Rockford via US-20. The town sits along State Route 78 in Jo Daviess County's rolling hills. It's named after the Apple River, a Mississippi tributary that once had wild crabapple trees along its banks.
