Annapolis, Maryland's capital city, sits on the Chesaperay Bay about 30 miles east of DC via US 50. Most visitors take Route 50 from Washington or I-97 south from Baltimore, both connecting to the historic downtown. The city houses the US Naval Academy and the Maryland State House, which served as the nation's temporary capitol in 1783-84 and features the largest wooden dome built without nails in America.
