Amherst is a small county seat in central Virginia's rolling hills, about 25 miles from Lynchburg via US Route 29. The town sits where the Piedmont meets the Blue Ridge foothills, with Route 60 providing east-west access and connections to I-64 about 20 miles south. It's a convenient stop for wine country visitors or Blue Ridge Parkway travelers. The 1870 courthouse with its mansard roof still dominates the town square.
