Ames is a small Texas town of about 1,100 people located 50 miles northeast of Houston in Liberty County. Highway 146 runs right through town, connecting south to Baytown's industrial area and north to Liberty. Most residents commute to Houston-area jobs or make short trips to Liberty for services. The area sits on flat coastal plains with hot, humid summers and mild winters typical of southeast Texas.
