Alton is a tiny ranching town of 260 people sitting at 7,000 feet in southern Utah's high desert. Highway 89 runs right through the middle, connecting north to Panguitch (25 miles) and south toward Kanab and the national parks. Most visitors are passing through on longer road trips between Bryce Canyon and Zion, using it as a quiet overnight stop. The town's 1898 log courthouse still stands on Main Street and doubled as the community dance hall.
