Alton is a growing city of 20,000 in the Rio Grande Valley, about 10 miles west of McAllen via US Highway 83. The subtropical climate brings hot summers and mild winters just miles from the Mexican border. Visitors typically arrive through McAllen Miller International Airport, 15 miles east, then take US 83 west. The original Missouri Pacific Railroad depot downtown recalls the city's early 1900s railroad origins.
