Alton sits on Mississippi River bluffs 25 miles north of St. Louis, connected by I-270 to Highway 67 north. The scenic route along Highway 100 follows the Great River Road tourist corridor. Most visitors arrive via the 30-minute drive from St. Louis, while Highway 67 serves as the main north-south route for longer trips. The city sits where the Mississippi, Missouri, and Illinois rivers converge, and downtown features a life-size bronze statue of Robert Wadlow, the world's tallest recorded man at 8 feet 11 inches.
