Alpena is a small farming town in south-central South Dakota, accessible via State Highway 34 about 45 miles northwest of Mitchell. Most visitors drive from Mitchell up US Highway 83 to Wessington Springs, then take Highway 34 east. The town sits in rolling prairie farmland with a historic grain elevator that still operates during harvest season.
