Alpena sits along Lake Huron's shore in northeastern Michigan, serving as a regional hub surrounded by forests and inland lakes. US-23 is the main route, connecting south to Bay City and I-75 near Flint, or north to Mackinaw City. M-32 runs east-west to Gaylord and inland resort areas. The airport sits seven miles west of downtown and provides access to Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary's famous shipwreck diving sites.
