Alma, a small county seat in east-central Kansas, sits along the Smoky Hill River valley about 12 miles north of Interstate 70. Reach it via Kansas Highway 99, which connects to I-70 near Paxico and links north to US Highway 24. Most visitors are passing through on I-70 between Kansas City and Denver, while local traffic comes from nearby Manhattan and Topeka. The 1939 limestone courthouse with its Art Deco tower dominates the town square.
