Alcoa lies in eastern Tennessee's Blount County, about 15 miles south of Knoxville in the Smoky Mountain foothills. Interstate 129 runs north-south through town, connecting to I-40 for longer trips to Nashville or Asheville. Most visitors arrive via McGhee Tyson Airport, which sits right in the city limits. The town was built around the massive Aluminum Company of America smelting plant that's been operating since 1919.
