Alcester is a farming town of about 1,000 people in southeastern South Dakota, 12 miles from the Iowa border along the Big Sioux River valley. Highway 11 runs through town and connects to Interstate 29 near Beresford, making it a convenient stop between Sioux Falls and Sioux City. The town's 1914 Carnegie Library remains one of the few still-operating Carnegie libraries in South Dakota.
