Akiak is a remote Yup'ik village of 377 people along the Kuskokwim River, 42 miles northeast of Bethel. No roads reach the community - access is only by air via Akiak Airport or by boat on the river. The village maintains a traditional fish wheel that still catches salmon using designs passed down through generations.
