Aitkin is a small Minnesota city of 2,300 people along the young Mississippi River, about 100 miles north of Minneapolis via Highway 169. Highway 210 runs east-west through town toward Brainerd and Duluth. The area offers classic northern Minnesota lake country with excellent fishing and seasonal recreation. Every February, locals parade their decorated ice fishing houses down Main Street before dragging them onto frozen lakes.
